Wirral Show 2009

Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 see this year’s Wirral Show come to New Brighton’s Dips.

Highlights this year include the Musical Ride of the Merseyside Police, the Yakovlevs Aerial Display Team and the Royal Artillery Parachute Team.

Rumour has it that the Airbus A380 may make another appearance this year.

Also present will be the largest mobile climbing wall, operated by the Royal Marines.

Bank Holiday Success

40,000 were in Hoylake, watching the Red Arrows, for the RNLI Lifeboat Open Day, and 13,000 attended the first annual Wirral Food and Drink Festival.

Organisers of the Food and Drink Festival are now hoping that they will be able to make the event a yearly fixture on Wirral’s calendar, while it is expected that the Lifeboat Open Day has smashed last year’s fundraising total of £27,000.

Anne Benson, one of the volunteers who organised the event (the Food and Drink festival), said many stallholders had said it was the best festival they had attended and would like to return next year.

She had said how amazed she was as streams of people flooded into the festival site as it opened on Sunday, and later queues formed on the roads outside with many more waiting to enter.

She said: “We’ve had fantastic support from everyone who has come here as well as from all the volunteers who have helped make it so successful.

“It would be nice if we could repeat that success again next year.”

If you were at either event over the weekend, and have stories or pictures you would like to share, please comment below or email us at leftbank@nerdshack.com (apologies for anyone who tried to email last week from the blog, but I misspelled the email address, which was highly clever of me! This is the correct one to use.)

Hello, Sailor…

If maritime history is your thing, then get down to Wallasey Town Hall in the next fortnight to peruse retired Merchant Navy man, Gordon Sykes-Little’s cap badge collection.

The collection contains more than 120 badges, with many from companies that no longer exist, spanning from the early 1900’s, through to 2000 and includes badges from the White Star Line, amongst others. The exhibition was opened by former QEII captain, and Meols resident, R.A. Woodall.

Billy’s Smart Circus

The world renowned Billy Smart’s Circus rolls into New Brighton’s Kings Parade for a week from Thursday, August 31 until Wednesday, September 6.

With two shows a day except for the opening and closing days, everyone who wants to see this fantastic show should be able to. Prices start from £10 for kids and £12 for adults, but half price vouchers seem to be in every shop around (in Birkenhead, at least). It’s a brand new show for 2006, and it’s completely, 100% human – so no animals to worry about. For tickets, phone 0870 444 1505.

Blooming Marvellous!

If you’re at a loose end on Sunday, August 20, get down to Birkenhead Park’s new pavillion for the first annual Wirral Flower and Vegetable Show. Open to the public from noon until 4pm, the show will feature over 35 different classes of plants, fruits and vegetables. The Lord Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Peter Johnson, will present the prizes.

The show is sponsored by Gordale Nursery and Garden Centre and is supported by the Birkenhead Regeneration Community Partnership, the National Vegetable Society,  Wirral Allotment Society, the Birkenhead Lions, and Wirral Borough Council.

For more details, phone Adam King, Birkenhead Park’s Senior Ranger, on 0151 652 5197.

Things To Do In August

Coming up this month (next week in fact) we have the Wirral Festival of Golf at Caldy Golf Club. It runs from August 13th until the 18th and has a numberof categories for all manner of stick and ball fans. For more info, contact Caldy Golf Club.

The bank holiday weekend sees the first ever Wirral Food and Drink Festival at Claremont Farm in Spital. Billed as a celebration of all things home grown, the festival aims to promote the great range of restaurants, bars, farm shops andchefs in the area. It runs on the 27th and 28th of August and more details can be found on the website.

Also on the bank holiday monday is the now traditional Hoylake Lifeboat Day. Star attractions, once again, are the world famous Red Arrows at 12pm. There’s a whole host of other stuff happening, too, so get down there. More details on their website (beware, though, it’s pretty graphic intensive).
